What is a "Candle Race"? This tradition started when Doug Larsen was
one year old. He was fascinated with the candle on his birthday cake.
He wanted it, but to be safe it was put on a plate nearby so he could
watch it. Additional candles were added for his parents. As John,
Mark, and Lori were added to the family each was given a candle. The
race part began at some point, but it is really an endurance contest.
The last candle to go out is the winner. This tradition has been
carried on in the next generation families. On this occasion the largest ever candle race was held to celebrate Stanford's and Suzanna's birthdays. Each family had a race amongst themselves and then the four winners had a final race. The overall winner was Elizabeth Larsen. |
