2010 07 10 - Microscope and Scripture cassettes

HOME
When I turned 12 years old my Dad took me to downtown Salt Lake City. I had been saving my money for quite a while and wanted to buy a microscope. As I remember it now, some 42 years later, we went to ZCMI, a large department store. The microscope shown on this page is the one I bought at that time. I got some prepared slides as Christmas presents later on. Now, I might have this whole story misremembered in my mind. In any case, this microscope brings fond memories of a day spent with my Dad. He passed away April 2, 2008. As part of getting ready for the basement bathroom project we have been going through everything in the basement and cleaning out. At first I was going to give the microscope away. It has rarely been used over the years and the focusing knobs don't work anymore. I took these pictures so that I would have a remembrance for later on. While taking the pictures I realized that the microscope doesn't take up much room. I don't have very many childhood things left anyway, so I decided to keep it.

The cassette tapes are another story. The voice talent in these tapes is Charles Freed, who worked at KSL Radio for many years. I worked at KSL from 1978 until 1985 when we moved to New Hampshire after I graduated from the University of Utah. Charles and I always got along well during the years I worked there. When we moved to New Hampshire the closest Mormon temple was in Washington D.C. There were temple trips organized a few times each year and we would usually go there by bus. On one trip in the late 80s I bought this set of cassette tapes for about $100. On the tapes are the New Testament, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. I listened to them many times. When computer technology advanced to the point where I could produce my own mp3 files, I recorded all these tapes to my computer. I split up the wav files into chapters and made mp3 files. I then burned them to CD. In that format I listened to them all again several times. As technology moved on the LDS Church made their versions of audio scriptures available as mp3s on their website. The quality is much better. No one uses cassette tapes anymore. There is no need to keep them. I still have my mp3 versions, so if I want to listen to Charles Freed's voice I can do that.
