So, yesterday we noticed a small puddle under the water heater. I dried it
and it seemed okay. Today it really started to puddle. Yup, time to
replace the water heater. So in the midst of this upheaval from the
bathroom basement project we get to change a water heater. This is also
the first day of my vacation. We seemed cursed somehow. In 2002 our water
heater also died on the first day of our vacation. Anyway, off to Home
Depot I went and purchased a replacement. I bought the wrong nipples.
After bringing the new water heater home and unloading it, Joyce and I
went to Lowes and bought more stuff for the bathroom project, a vaniety
and sink, and cupboards for the outside area. While I was gone, Chris Weintz and Bradford hooked up the garden hose to the old water heater and siphoned out the tank. They also moved the old one out and put the new one in place. In less than an hour we hooked up the new water heater and got it going. Hot water sure is nice to have! I was somewhat amazed at how much the cost of water heaters has gone up. In 1990 I bought a 50 gallon water heater from Sears for about $250. In 2002 I replaced that with a 50 gallon from Sears for $260. Now only 8 years later the replacement cost $444. Sears was more expensive than Home Depot by about $30 so I went with a GE brand. I like the fact that you no longer have to light the pilot with a match. They put one of those piezo electric push button igniters like are in gas grills. That worked really well. There is a little window to look through that gives visibility to the pilot. The bulk of the project the last few days has been the tile work. It takes a long time to do the tile. I did some electrical by wiring the two new circuits into the breaker panel. |
