This Wednesday evening we attended the special NHSS Band Uniform
Benefit Concert. It was an excellent concert.
One of Stanford's classmates, Andrew Cote, wrote a
band work entitled "For Stan." Wednesday evening was the world premier
performance of the work. We talked some with Andrew before the concert
began. He also spoke to the audience just before the work was performed.
The song started out with an alto saxophone playing all by itself. The
beginning phrase was the first five notes of "Called to Serve". That
tugged strongly at my heart and brought tears to my eyes. The phrase was
repeated throughout the work being passed from section to section. The
band did such a great job on the song. It ended again with an alto
saxophone doing a solo. In total, four alto sax players took parts
playing the solos. It was such an emotional experience for me. I talked
with Andrew after the concert wondering how he knew about "Called to
Serve". He said that he had kept the program from the funeral and had
used that as the theme for his work. It was awesome. We will be getting
a DVD of the concert. A video of the premier performance done by the NHSS Concert Band was posted to youtube.com. Click here to see the video. I have also included an mp3 of the song on this page that you can download. Also, there is a flash video file that can also be downloaded if desired. |
