Today was the 7th annual Stanford Larsen Memorial Blood Drive. Patty
Ogden has organized this every year since Stanford passed away from
cancer in Jan 2007. Julia was a first time doner as was Melanie Nelson.
Joyce was able to donate and Phillip was finally convinced to donate.
I tried, but my iron is too low again. Julia went through the whole donation process just fine and was talking on the cell phone with Heather while sitting at the snack table. All of a sudden I heard something hit the floor. I looked around and saw that Julia had dropped my cell phone for some reason. It looked odd just sitting on the floor upside down. I asked Julia why she had dropped my cell phone and all of a sudden she just rolled off the chair and face planted on the floor. I immediately dove to the floor and rolled her over to her back and pulled her head up onto my lap. Others immediately came over, especially the Red Cross staff. After a few seconds of being horizontal on the floor her eyes fluttered and she regained consciousness. Her glasses were still on the floor so I picked them up and put them on my head. When she hit the floor she must have hit her glasses. The right temple was bent out and the right nose pad and bracket were folded over. The lenses were okay. I had someone prop her legs up on a chair. She was very clamy and very pale. After a few minutes the staff brought one of the spare cots over and we got Julia onto it with her legs elevated. A few minutes later she threw up, something she hasn't done in years. She started feeling much better after that. She stayed there for probably at least a half hour while the staff filled out paper work and monitored her condition. She recovered fully and returned to the snack table. I'm proud of her and her desire to donate blood. I hope this first time negative experience won't discourage her from future donations. |
