Today was the 9th annual Stanford Mark Larsen Memorial Blood Drive
held at the church. I took a vacation day so that I could be there
all day. I opened up the building for the staff. I set up the same
slide show using the projector that was shown at the viewing, except
I removed about ten pictures from the hospice house and chemo that
are somewhat shocking. The goal for this small drive was 16 units of whole blood and 1 unit of double reds. We collected 25 units of whole blood and 1 double red. So, it was a very successful drive. A couple weeks ago the Red Cross had cancelled the drive because so few people had made appointments. Patty Ogden is the coordinator for the drives at our church building and she got really upset with the Red Cross. She pointed out that this was a memorial drive being held on Stanford's birthday and that it would not work at all to try to move it to September. The Red Cross relented, but then we had to get at least 22 people to make appointments. Patty led the charge through emails and on Facebook. As of last Wednesday there were 22 appointments. The next frustrating thing was that one of their staff members didn't show up and didn't even call in. That left them with only three people to handle everyone. Because of that they had to turn away walk ins. There were at least 6 walk-ins rejected, including our neighbors. That is a shame. All that work done to spread the news and get people to come and then they were turned away. However, it was a successful drive and a good way to honor Stanford on his birthday. |
