Today's post construction project was trying to fix a
problem with the front porch steps. We haven't figured out
how we want the front garden and porch to be. In the mean time,
today I put in three 2ft x 2ft bricks (they're very heavy!) at
the bottom of the porch steps. I'm hoping this will keep the
steps from getting so dirty whenever it rains. We'll see how
that works out. Another thing done today was trying to solve a problem with the new bulkhead stairs. There has been a lot of settling of the dirt underneath the steps. We had a very heavy thunderstorm last week and due to blocked down spouts in the rain gutters we ended up getting a lot of water running down under the bulkhead steps. About 13 gallons of water seeped into the basement. Fortunately I noticed the problem as it was happening and was able to use a shop vac to suck up the water before it could cause any damage to carpeted areas of the basement. Today Veary Site and Septic packed sand under the bulkhead steps and also filled in around the bulkhead so that the grade is away from the house instead of into the house like it was. Now we need a rainstorm to see how well these mitigation efforts work. Oh, and I already cleaned out all the down spouts. I had to removed the gutter guards over each down spout to remove all the accumulated needles and dirt. The gutters weren't cleaned properly when the gutter guards were installed. There were lots of needles left in the gutter. These floated down and blocked the down spouts. Hopefullyl that problem will never occur again! |
